Julián Calero Becomes New Coach of Levante UD

Levante UD and Julián Calero have reached an agreement that appoints the Madrid-born coach as the head of the Levante team until June 2026.

The new Granota coach began his coaching career with youth teams at AD Parla, where he previously played as a footballer. He later joined Atlético de Madrid, where he managed the Juvenil A team until 2005 when he became the assistant coach at Rayo Vallecano under Míchel González. A season later, he joined Real Madrid, where he served as an assistant coach for Real Madrid Castilla CF alongside Julen Lopetegui, while also coaching the youth team. In 2009, he took charge of Alcobendas Sport in the Tercera División and, a year later, returned to AD Parla.

Calero has also had several international coaching experiences. The first was in 2011 when he became the assistant coach to Dmitri Cheryshev at FC Volga Nizhny Novgorod in Russia. The second was in 2012 when he held the same role alongside Luis Milla at Al Jazira Club. Between these experiences, he returned to AD Parla and led the team to the promotion playoffs for Segunda División B. After his stint at Al Jazira Club, he joined AD Alcorcón in the Tercera División and, a year later, CA Pinto in the same category. In 2014, he moved abroad again to FC Porto as Julen Lopetegui’s assistant, participating in the Champions League for two seasons.

In 2016, he joined Real Oviedo as Fernando Hierro's assistant and in 2017 became the coach of CDA Navalcarnero in Segunda División B. The following season, he had an unforgettable experience as an assistant coach for the Spanish national team during the World Cup in Russia.

His next team was CF Rayo Majadahonda in Segunda División B, and a year later, in 2020, he joined Burgos CF in the third tier. With Burgos, he achieved promotion to Segunda División and secured the team’s stay in the division, keeping them in the upper half of the table for most of the last season. After his time in Burgos, in September 2023, he took over FC Cartagena in LaLiga Hypermotion, lifting the team from the bottom of the table and securing their survival with three games to spare, ultimately finishing 14th.

The new Levante UD coach arrives with his assistant coach Antonio Carmona and fitness coach Roberto Ovejero.

More Than You Think

Levante UD announced Julián Calero's appointment on their social media channels with a video showing the coach preparing a mortadella sandwich, referencing one of his famous quotes. The video humorously highlights how careful preparation and quality ingredients can turn a simple sandwich into a gourmet dish.

This video nods to Calero, using humor to introduce the new coach and previewing elements of the marketing and communication campaign for the upcoming season, which will be presented soon with the launch of the 2024/2025 membership campaign.

Official Presentation

Julián Calero will be officially presented as the new coach of Levante UD on Monday, June 10, at 1:30 PM in the Press Room of the Estadio Ciutat de València. The press conference will be streamed live on the club's YouTube channel.
